ABOUT Junior

Junior “June” Nyong’o is an actor, musician and DJ based in Southern California. Born and raised under the equatorial blue skies of Nairobi, Kenya, June moved to the US to continue pursuing his artistic passions. He has a BA in theatre studies and digital arts from Stetson University (FL) and recently completed his MFA in Acting at UC San Diego (CA).

June has a deep love for language, and stories with rich, emotional depth. The roles he has embodied on stage so far in his career have only deepened this love. From the uneasy melancholy of Hamlet to the machismo of Shango (In the Red & Brown Water), language and its interplay with masculinity and heritage stay at the centre of June’s exploration of character and self.

In 2018 June decided to build on his already expansive and deep love of music by learning to DJ, and pursuing it professionally as ‘Freesia Flow’. Drawing on years of avid listenership, his DJ sets are an extension of this same passion for exploration, curating sounds that reflect his own history, influences and culture.

Moving to Southern Cali (naturally) cultivated an interest in surfing and a new love of the ocean. As a long time athlete and sports lover, surfing is the latest movement medicine for June. Time not spent on stage or in front of a camera, is spent moving (often in company) - playing football, basketball, lifting weights, dancing, walking, cycling.

June’s exuberance for life is rooted in a love for humanity. A love for connection, both internal and external. In all his creative pursuits this sits at the centre, a rootedness in home, identity and in the power of just loving each other as we are.
